Minutes of January 17, 2007, Meeting
Board Members Present: Kathy Barrett, John Gendron, Frank Mizner, Barb Seperich, John Smoyer, Chuck Wennerlund. Board Members Absent: Lin Adams, Fred Conway.

Introductions:
The meeting was called to order by Barb Seperich at 9 AM. First-time attendee Patsy Fimbres, who retired from Personnel in December, introduced herself.
Secretary's Report:
Kathy reported for Lin and shared information on two members who have passed away: Nada Creason, who retired from the Accounting Division in 1979 and was 90 years old, passed away December 7, 2006; Alice Carpenter, wife of Building Inspections retiree Kent Carpenter, passed away on January 2, 2007.
Speaker:
Bob Nonnemaker, Financial Freedom, presented information on Reverse Mortgages:
- Allows seniors (62 and older) to tap into the equity in their home, and they retain the title
- No repayment until borrower dies, moves out, or sells property
Proceeds from a Reverse Mortgage are non-taxable - Benefits calculated by appraised value of home, age of the youngest borrower, and current interest rate
Treasurer's Report:
Chuck provided the Treasurer's report.
Task Force:
Barb said there is no current report, as the Task Force will be meeting tomorrow.
Legislative:
John Smoyer reported the Legislature is just beginning, so there is no report at this time.
Nominating Committee:
Barb reported a nominating committee will be appointed following the membership vote on the bylaws revision.
Bylaws Revisions Review:
Kathy presented the Bylaws amendments, recommended by the Bylaws Committee (Tanya Collins, Jo Ferguson, John Gendron, and Kathy Barrett). A few questions were asked, and the efforts of the committee were praised. The Agenda did not specifically include the verbiage that a vote would be taken on the proposed revisions to the Bylaws; however, a summary of the proposed Bylaws changes was provided to each member with the meeting Agenda. A vote of the membership was taken as to whether to vote on the revisions, and passed unanimously. The proposed Bylaws revisions were voted on by a show of hands and passed with 32 in favor and 1 abstention.
Announcements:
Barb reminded the membership of the mammogram opportunity; a flyer containing the information had been sent to members; extra fliers were also provided at the meeting.
Retiree Badges - Jo Ferguson provided information on City of Mesa Retiree name badges. Badges may be obtained from the Security Office at 340 E 6th Drive on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays from 9:00 - 11:00 AM and 1:00 - 3:00 PM. It is advisable to call first to be certain there will be someone in the office to issue the badge. Charlene in the Security Office may be reached at 644-5113. The photo can be the one used when the retiree was employed, or a new picture can be taken.
Attendees were reminded to place their name badges in the box when leaving the meeting. Badges were printed for regular attendees, and others had hand-printed badges.

Next Meeting: February 21, 2007 - 9:00 AM, Community Room, Mesa Fire Station 201, NW corner of 1st St. and Mesa Drive. The speaker will be Candace Bow, discussing Guardians and Conservators.
